Net metering

Whenever a user installs a power generating system (either Wind or Solar) in his/her premises, it sends the surplus power other than the self consumed power back into the grid to power other users. Net metering originated with electric companies as a way to encourage consumers to invest in renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power. A Bi-directional energy meter has to be installed in place of the unidirectional energy meter of a specific site. The excess/surplus energy which is sent back to the grid via Bi-directional meter, spins the readings backward rather than forward, giving you a credit that you can use to pay for your future energy use (Excess energy can be carried forward to the next billing cycle depending upon the policies of regional electricity distribution board).

Accordingly it is very essential to size you solar/wind energy plant in order to manage your electricity bill for the complete year as the electricity generated by solar panels/wind turbine varies throughout the year i.e. throughout the four seasons.
